The American Dialect Society has selected "app" to be the word of the year!  At their voting session, members of the 121-year-old organization selected the abbreviated form of "application," a software program for a computer or phone, as the word of the year for 2010.  For the past 21 years, the society has highlighted a word that was newly prominent or notable during the previous 12 months.  ADS members include linguists, lexicographers, etymologists, grammarians, historians, researchers and writers.
