Additional Information

Boating Safety Day at NFTA Boat Harbor’s southern parking lot on May 17th, 2014, from 10:00 AM to 02:00 PM. This Boating Safety Day will be the perfect event to kick off National Safe Boating Week. The mission of the National Safe Boating Week is to educate the public to ensure a safe, secure and enjoyable recreational boating experience as well as minimize the loss of life, personal injury, and property damage while cooperating with environmental and national security efforts.

This community outreach event will also introduce the citizens of Western New York to their maritime law enforcement and first responders to give them a better understanding of the important role each agency plays in keeping the maritime community safe and secure. This event will include multiple agencies that make up an advance local emergency response team. A.L.E.R.T. consists of Fire Departments, Police Departments, United States Coast Guard, Mercy Flight, Underwater Rescue Teams and Water Rescue Units on Eastern Lake Erie. These agencies work together frequently to get familiarized with each others equipment, manpower, capabilities and jurisdiction as well as practicing command and control plans to be utilized to provide multi-agency responses. This safety day will be a perfect forum for these agencies to answer any questions that the public may have.

This safety day will also include a Coast Guard Helicopter demonstration over the outer harbor, several booths to support boating education, safety awareness, as well as providing additional reading material to the public. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will also be available to conduct Vessel Safety Checks.
