Fist Fight Breaks Out At Classical Music Concert

Wait a minute, I’m confused. Isn’t a hockey game supposed to break out at a fist fight?

Well, last week, a performance by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was disturbed, if not exactly interrupted, by a fist fight in the box seats. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the fisticuffs were sparked by a dispute over seat assignments. The victim ended up with a cut on his forehead, while the man who started it escaped the hall before police and ushers arrived.

Attendees said the conductor, Ricardo Muti, looked over his shoulder at the melee, seemingly infuriated by the disturbance. But, even in classical music, the show must go on. Muti and the orchestra continued the performance without a break.

Oddly enough, this isn’t the first time something like this has happened. Five years ago, a performance of the Boston Pops actually had to be briefly halted when a disagreement over crowd noise led to a chair-throwing brawl [and you thought that only happened at wrestling matches].

For what it’s worth, fights have broken out at operas [usually over staging] and the first performances of controversial-in-their-time symphonies [Stravinski's The Rite Of Spring is just one notable example]. Makes your typical heavy-metal crowd look positively sedate…
