Takeru Kobayashi polished off an incredible 110 hot dogs in 10 minutes at the New York State Fair in Syracuse on Sunday, unofficially besting the old mark by 42 dogs.

Joey Chestnut won the Famous Nathan’s Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest this year by downing 68 hot dogs, which is recognized as the world record by the International Federation of Competitive Eating.

But Kobayashi is not a member of that organization — he split off with Major League Eating in a contract dispute with the Famous Nathan’s organizers in 2009. He now travels the land entering other various eating contests, and at every stop where hot dogs are involved, he issues a challenge to Chestnut to meet him in a one-on-one eat-off.

So I guess you could call Kobayashi’s effort on Sunday the unofficial hot dog-eating record. Sunday’s event was sponsored by Hoffman’s.
