We've all been there....you're trying to concentrate on work, or trying to sneak in a nap, or just walking through the mall....and it hits you:  You can't get that song out of your head!

For me the two biggest earworm culprits are Carly Rae Jepson's "Call Me Maybe" and Train's "Hey Soul Sister".  I don't know why....but these two songs have laid eggs in my brain that will randomly hatch at the most inopportune time.

Dr. Ira Hyman, a music psychologist at Western Washington University, and says the best way to get a song out of your head is solving a puzzle that's "kind of" hard.

Using the Goldilocks methodology, the puzzle shouldn't be too hard, or too easy, as you won't be engaging your mind enough.  But something like Sudoku or a video game can get that song out of your working memory, where it's currently dominating.

So the next time an earworm strikes, try a quick problem-solver...or turn Joy FM on and go about your day. :)
