In June Blooms Our Love For Fathers — Delilah’s Reflections

Father’s Day is just around the corner, so it’s time to show your love and appreciation for your dad.

A few people wrote in to Delilah about how they feel about their fathers and even one wrote about her husband as a father figure.

Lisa writes:

My dad taught me a lot of things. He taught me how to maintain a car and keep it in good condition. He must have done a good job because I had a mechanic tell me that he’d seldom seen a young lady take care of a car as well as I did. He also taught me, when I was in 6th grade, how to balance a checkbook, and how to count back change to a customer, using a muffin tin and several rolls of change. Lastly he taught me not to put off making your final plans, as he almost died when I was 6. He showed me, as the youngest child, where the family’s important papers were, and Mom gave me a checklist of what to do in what order, just in case something happened. He wanted to make life secure for his kids in case of any emergency. He even taught us (when we didn’t want to know) about a Living Will and a power of attorney. He never forced his kids to make those tough choices for himself…he did instead. So when he became ill for the last time, we were free to concentrate on just seeing him for the last time. It was one of the kindest and best gifts he ever gave us, that gift of time and freedom to just be with him.

My husband Chris and I have been together for over 10 years. Last year my husband and I were separated for 3 months. During the time we were separated I came to understand and learn why it is that I love him so much. He is my heart, my soul, and my number one fan. He is the man I hope our son will be, and the type of man I hope our daughter falls in love with. I feel that I am the luckiest woman on earth and I wouldn’t trade him for the world! Please play a song for my husband. And tell him Happy Father’s Day and how much my children and I love him.

Jennifer writes:

Words simply cannot describe the love and admiration I have for my father. My dad didn’t have it easy, in 1980 when my brother was diagnosed with severe Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at age 5 and had to have numerous surgeries, my dad worked two and three jobs so my mom was able to leave work and be by my brother’s side. He has helped my brother through years of pain and rehabilitation, until he had finally reached a stage of remission. In 2005 my dad’s career came to an end after the plant he had been working at for over 30 years shut down, and if that wasn’t devastating enough, the next day my mom was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. My dad kept his head high, and pushed forward. He stood by my mom every step of the way, he never let her down, and he battled with her through the chemo, through the tears and through the fear of losing her. After nine long months of chemo, we were blessed to hear fantastic news that my mom was now in remission. As devastating as that time had been for my family and I, I am so thankful that God provided us with such a strong man in our lives. My dad has taught me many, many, things in life. He has shown me that true love does exist, that real men really do stand by your side for better or for worse and in sickness and in health. He showed me that his loyalty, faith, and love were beyond measure. My dad has been such a wonderful father to me and such a wonderful husband to my mom; he has truly set the bar very high. On this Father’s day and each and every day, I’m so grateful to have been blessed to have him in my life.
