Is Sex Better When You’re Married?

Strictly speaking, of course, it’s a matter of opinion. But new evidence says the answer is yes.

Sexual health expert Dr. Laura Berman, host of “In The Bedroom With Dr. Laura Berman” (Oprah’s OWN network), says:

“Studies have found that married people have more sex than single people, and they also have more varied sex,”

One of those studies was a 2010 project spearheaded by Indiana University.Based on over 5,800 interviews with both married and single respondents, 61 % of singles polled said they hadn’t had sex for at least a year, as compared to just 18% of married people.

So why do many married couples feel like the thrill is gone? According to psychologist Harriet Lerner, PhD, the issue comes down to thinking they should be having sex more frequently than they are:

“Often, lack of sex doesn’t mean anything else is wrong in your relationship. Sexuality is vulnerable and often has a life of its own apart from how your marriage is doing.”

Lerner notes that couples who aren’t on the same sexual schedule should make an effort to connect on pace with the more aggressive partner, adding, “If you wait to have sex until one or both of you genuinely feel desire, you’ll wait too long.”
