New Problem for Niagara County SPCA

Second chances in Niagara County for both the SPCA and a dog is left for dead on a busy highway.

Macie, a 5-year-old pit bull mix was severely emaciated when she was brought into the Niagara SPCA, weighing just over 30 pounds and suffering multiple infections.

"We're suspecting, just because of her condition, that she was used as a breeding dog," said Amy Lewis, Interim Executive Director for the shelter.

Unfortunately the story highlights an even bigger problem for SPCA of Niagara.

"We have an influx of animals...we are absolutely 100-percent packed," explained Lewis.

There's basically no more room at the shelter. So now the shelter is turning to the community for help.

"We've got an adoption promotion set for Wednesday from Noon until 8:00 p.m. We are reducing all of our adoption fees," said Lewis.

Lewis is hoping for a tremendous turnout and many newly-emptied cages as a result, so that when the next Macie comes, there is plenty of room to take her in.

The adoption fee reduction takes place on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Lockport Road facility.
