If you own a car nothing makes you more annoyed, maybe even panic a bit, then when the check engine light comes on! I hate it and think it's a scam for car repair shops. That being said, there are some common steps to take to remedy the situation. The first thing to do is check your gas cap! Loosen it like you're filling up and replace. It will probably take a day before the light resets. Other common causes include the oxygen sensor, mass air flow sensor, spark plugs, and catalytic converter.

If the light is on you can continue to safely drive until you get it checked out. If the light is flashing that indicates a critical problem that needs immediate attention. Or you can do what one of my co-workers recommended. Put a piece of black tape over it and keep on driving!
