Memorial Day is one of the most traveled holidays in the U.S. People will travel an average of 690 miles this weekend (last year the average was 642 miles) and spend $659 over the course of the weekend, which is down 6 percent from last year, according to USA Today.

If you are driving, here are some things to keep in mind:

Have An Emergency Kit - I know it sounds a little silly, but never know when you might need it. It should have a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, warning lights, flares or hazards triangles, tire gauge, foam tire sealant, jack and lug wrench, jumper cables, flashlight, pad and paper, disposable flash camera, and important phone numbers (insurance agent/company, auto-club, family emergency numbers, your repair shop, etc.).

Think Fuel Efficiency - Long trips = lots of gas! When filling up, always fill up at the coolest part of the day, either early in the morning or after 5:30 p.m., if you can. Check your tire pressure because a couple PSI can make a difference! Lastly, change out your air filters annually.

Avoid Traffic Tickets - There is no magic solution to avoid a ticket if you get pulled over by an officer. The most important thing is to stay calm and follow the officers instructions. Here are five tips for if you get pulled over this weekend.
