Warner Bros. is Converting ‘The Wizard of Oz’ to 3D, Obviously, and Releasing the Largest Blu-ray/DVD Collection Ever

Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. made a couple of big announcements today — first, they’re releasing the largest Blu-ray/DVD collection ever with a 100 DVD/50 Blu-ray “Best Films from Warner Bros.” set. But the bigger news is that they’re also converting ‘The Wizard of Oz’ to 3D because it was bound to happen eventually.

It’s one of those good news/bad news situations. We’re totally stoked for the “Best Films” sets, as described in the press release:

The Collections

The Best of Warner Bros. 100 Film DVD Collection*: 100 movies including all 22 of Warner Bros. library’s Best Picture ™ Winners and two new documentaries (details below) on 55 discs presented in book style premium packaging.

The Best of Warner Bros. 50 Film Blu-ray™ Collection* includes 50 movies and the two new documentaries on 52 discs, also presented in book style premium packaging. It will introduce several new-to-Blu-ray film titles, includingGrand Hotel, Mrs. Miniver, and Driving Miss Daisy.

Both of the above are limited and numbered collections and each includes a collectible poster and series of art cards featuring movie poster designs created by legendary American graphic designer Bill Gold.

In addition, there will be DVD sets with 20 films each released throughout the year, giving everyone a chance to own the collection. Check out the bottom of this post for a full list of the films included in the collection.

That’s the good news. The bad news? Warner Bros. has decided that there’s no such thing as a dead horse, so they’re converting timeless classic ‘The Wizard of Oz’ to 3D and re-releasing it in stores next September or October. There’s no mention of a theatrical re-release (yet), but can’t we just appreciate this movie for the gem it’s always been? Why do we need to gussy it up and make it all fancy-like? We know — we probably sound like the old people who were upset about all that technicolor mumbo-jumbo back in the day, but ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is a beautiful film, and there’s really nothing they need to do to make it better. But money talks, so here we are.
