I always thought it had something to do with the writing and printing on the tubes, similar to what you see on the bottom corner on a newspaper. Not so much.

The colored squares or rectangular bars found on the crimp at the closed end of toothpaste tubes signify the composition of the product -- whether its ingredients are "natural" or "chemical" and whether the toothpaste includes "medicine".

Green square = Natural
Blue square = Natural + Medicine
Red square = Natural + Chemical
Black square = Pure Chemical
