MTV Video Music Awards Executive Producer Amy Doyle has confirmed to Billboard magazine that the show will “pay tribute” to Britney Spears on this year’s broadcast.

“Obviously everything from her choreography to her fashion to her videos will be (covered). We said, ‘Let’s challenge ourselves to do something unique’,” said Doyle.

A promo for the upcoming VMAs depicting Spears stirred speculation, although details about the tribute itself and whether the 29-year-old pop diva will make an in-person appearance are still unclear.

There are reports Selena Gomez may sing ‘…Baby One More Time,’ while Katy Perry could belt out ‘Oops!…I Did It Again,’ and Janet Jackson could perform ‘I’m as Slave 4 U.’ Demi Lovato could also put her take on ‘Toxic.’ That’s not all, though — Kesha and Nicki Minaj may team up for ‘Gimme More,’ with Lady Gaga doing a version of ‘Circus.’ Madonna will then reportedly hand a lifetime achievement award over to Spears.

VMA producers are also “talking about acknowledging” the late Amy Winehouse. “We had a great history with Amy,” Doyle said. “She was very near and dear to us.”

The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28 on MTV and MTV.com.
