What Changes Should the Sabres Make?
Sabres fans are retiring their jerseys early this year as the team wrapped up its season with a disappointing loss to the Flyers last Friday that knocked out any hope of making the playoffs. Many fans are speculating on what changes should be made to the team for next season. What do you think?
Nearly every fan has something to say about what the Sabres need. Is it changes to the front office, coaching staff or players?
The Sabres have made the playoffs 29 times since the team's inaugural season 42 years ago, including reaching the Stanley Cup finals twice. The first time the Sabres reached the finals was during the 1974-'75 season in which they lost to the Philadelphia Flyers, the second time during the 1998-'99 season when the Dallas Stars won the final game in the midst of a controversial goal.
The team has played in the post season in 8 of the last 15 seasons since Lindy Ruff was named head coach of the Sabres. Ruff is known as "the winningest coach in Sabres history" and the "longest tenured coach in the NHL."
Could the Sabres' front office be in need of some changes? Many of the decisions regarding players come down from General Manager Darcy Regier, who has been around as long as Ruff. Regier was the man in charge after the 2006-'07 season when Daniel Briere was lost to the Flyers and Chris Drury to the New York Rangers. Both were considered keys to the Sabres success.
Many players have skated for the Sabres as well. Thomas Vanek, Jason Pominville, Derek Roy and so many others are all names we are familiar with the last few seasons.
